Vernita Saunders has mobility limitations due to ongoing medical issues. She contacted the Illinois Department of Aging for help making her bathroom accessible and safe for her.

She was given some suggestions on where she could go to for help but didn’t know where to start. Fortunately, a friend referred her to Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) and a home repair specialist was able to assist in installing grab bars in her bathroom.

Ms. Saunders said that the most important thing for seniors who are homeowners is that they need to feel comfortable in their own homes to be able to age in place.

“We need to feel safe in our home” is what Ms. Saunders said
