Charles & Vickie Edwards' Story: Home Repair in Riverdale
Riverdale, Illinois | Ages 74 and 71
Charles and Vickie Edwards have owned their Riverdale home since 1996. Both now live with disabilities, and the house that has sheltered them for nearly 30 years needs repairs they can't afford.
Water From Above and Below
For years, their basement has flooded during heavy rain. Each flood raises the risk of water damage, structural problems, and mold and mildew that could threaten their health. The roof also leaks and needs repair or replacement.
The Edwardses have hesitated to file an insurance claim. A major insurer canceled their coverage after past claims, and they can't risk losing coverage again.
A Safer Place to Age
Their needs go beyond the structure. Walk-in showers would make bathing safer and reduce their risk of falls.
They have contacted their village, their township, and several nonprofits. They sit on waiting lists for multiple programs but still haven’t received help. On a limited income, they can't qualify for or afford a home improvement loan.
The Edwardses want what most seniors want: to keep living safely and independently in their own home. A statewide home repair program would help make that possible.
Waiting Lists Don't Fix Roofs
Stories like the Edwardses' show legislators how many seniors are stuck waiting for help. If you or someone you love needs home repairs you can't afford, we want to hear from you.
